Walkers & Wheeled Walkers
Walkers are used to provide assistance in walking on level surfaces, both inside and outside the home. Walkers are appropriate when one extremity is weak or when standing balance is impaired.
Walkers have four legs that all touch the floor during walking. As one ages, this allows for partial weight bearing when needed and improves balance with four legs for stability.
Standard walkers do not have wheels and create a stop/start type of gait pattern. Wheeled walkers have wheels on the front and provide a flowing gait pattern.
Rollators have four wheels with front pivot wheels, a fold-down seat and hand brakes. Rollators make it easier to turn.
