Canes & Crutches

Hand Holding Cane ImageCanes and crutches assist with walking. They are typically used when one side of the body is weak or when an extremity can only take so much weight bearing down on it.

  • Crutches - Axillary (underarm) crutches fit under a client's underarms, while the weight bearing surface is felt along the waist. These are for short term use.
    • Forearm crutches fit along a client's forearm and waist and are used for much longer durations.
  • Canes - Straight canes, small base quad canes and large base quad canes provide increasing levels of stability. Canes are used on the body's opposite side of weakness.
